Depeche Mode: Cosmic Synth-Pop
World Cafe, July 10, 2009 – Judging by the charts alone, Depeche Mode could be rated one of the most successful bands in history. Along with 45 U.K. singles, top-ranked records in countries around the globe and sales well into the millions, the electro-pop outfit from Essex has made 12 influential albums since its formation in 1980, each one adding to the band’s extensive reputation.
With provocative lyrics, stark synths and a new take on sampling, Depeche Mode is credited with inspiring modern techno, as well as many new-wave outfits. The group first started using synthesizers and drum machines because amps were too expensive and cumbersome. Before long, its catchy and dramatic beats were being heard all over the world.
The band’s latest project, ‘Sounds Of The Universe’, was released in March. It’s a cosmic synth-pop creation with plenty of electronics and choral refrains. In this interview, host David Dye asks about the relationship between songwriter Martin Gore and singer Dave Gahan. They’ll also discuss the use of older analog synth effects on the new album.
